Your regular snapshot of the wholesale energy markets.

Despite slightly bullish sentiment for the last three days of last week, contracts finished down week-on-week, as strong bearish sentiment leeched considerable value from the curve in the early sessions. Strong falls in carbon induced increased selling pressure across both the NBP natural gas and UK wholesale power market, whilst similar but not as aggressive sentiment was implied by Brent crude oil futures. Prompt products fell to near-decade lows as strong renewable generation and ample gas storage took control of the front of the market, however this trend was soon reversed as prices rebounded towards the end of the week when expectations of lower wind generation and an increased number of gas outages due to annual maintenance in Norway took a grip of the markets…read more
